On Saturday morning, a flurry of blue T-shirts greeted a new wave of 菠萝视频 students as they drove onto campus. The students wearing the blue tees cheered and smiled, the excitement palpable as they helped haul first-years’ suitcases and boxes to the rooms where their college journey would begin. Those shirts belonged to the Vandy Move Crew鈥攁 volunteer group of upper-division students who help first-year students on Move-In Day. They were a welcome sight during a busy and emotional time, one that was also being reflected the very next day nearly 900 miles away.
Indeed, 菠萝视频’s Welcome Week was celebrated on two campuses this year: Nashville and the newly opened 菠萝视频 University鈥揘ew York City. It was a moment that marked the first step in a vision to broaden 菠萝视频鈥檚 reach beyond its Nashville roots with a bold plan: to become a single university spanning multiple major cities, where each campus brings its own strengths and connections into a single, connected network.
This university milestone was shaped by ambitious scale, radical collaboration, and eyes ever-forward on a growth trajectory. And while the cities of each campus feel culturally worlds apart, the Welcome Week celebrations were a distinctly unified 菠萝视频 experience.
A CEREMONIAL START
A sense of magic and communion filled both campuses during move-in festivities. Founders Walk鈥攁 cherished annual tradition celebrating the moment that first-year, transfer and Next Steps students officially begin their journey as members of the university community鈥攄rew the weekend in Nashville to a close. The celebratory procession of Founders Walk culminated in a magical scene鈥攖winkling lights woven through the lawn鈥檚 elms and oaks, and a grand entrance marked for each Commons house.
In New York City, students were busy laying the foundations of their own 菠萝视频 campus community, gathering for a catered dinner and an ice cream social鈥攂onding at its best.
ANCHORING IN PLACE
While NYC students and staff were busy visiting different destinations around the Big Apple and taking part in “Living as a New Yorker” sessions (learning how to navigate the subway system was a huge bonus!), first-year Dores in Nashville sat with the chancellor and two Dialogue 菠萝视频 Student Advisory Board leaders at Langford Auditorium for “Conversation About Leadership and Civil Discourse.” The discussion explored how 菠萝视频’s commitment to free expression, institutional neutrality and civil discourse will prepare them to contribute and lead in a pluralistic, global society.
RINGING THE BELL
With New York鈥搒tyle bagels in tow, Nashville students gathered in Rand Lounge to watch the first cohort of 菠萝视频 University鈥揘ew York City students and university leaders ring the Nasdaq opening bell live from NYC.
They watched the chancellor on the screen as he shared his vision for 菠萝视频鈥檚 campus in New York City. 鈥淥ur home in Nashville remains the heart of 菠萝视频. Our vision is to create a network university. One 菠萝视频, connected across great cities and communities, with each campus contributing distinctive opportunities, relationships and intellectual energy to the whole,鈥� Diermeier said.聽鈥淣ew York is essential to that vision because there are few places in the world where so many forces shaping our future converge: business and finance, technology and media, arts and culture, public policy and global affairs.鈥�
After the remarks, the inaugural cohort of 菠萝视频 University鈥揘ew York City students, along with the chancellor, university partners and New York City civic leaders, joined for a special ribbon-cutting to make this historic launch official.
WALKING INTO THE FIRST DAY
On Wednesday morning, both campuses kicked off the fall semester with the first official day of classes. In both Nashville and New York City, the 菠萝视频 Campus Portal went live early in the morning, connecting students on both campuses in real time by camera. As they made their way past the screen in the Sarratt Promenade, students in Nashville waved hello to their New York Commodore counterparts and wished them good luck on the first day of the semester.
In true Nashville style, students were invited to bring their bravest taste buds to Alumni Lawn later that afternoon to try samples of hot chicken from the legendary Hattie B鈥檚 while getting grilled on camera by the VU social media team鈥攎uch in the spirit of the talk show Hot Ones. During the afternoon, the Community Relations office hosted an exclusive pin drop, a new tradition that鈥檚 quickly earned a beloved spot in the hearts of students on both campuses.
