Noted art critic will speak at ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ University about the as part of a two-day symposium that will probe the relationship between words and images.
The “Between Word and Image Symposium” will take place Oct. 25-26 on the ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ campus. Sponsored by the at ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ, the symposium is free and open to the public.
The symposium will be held in conjunction with the Oct. 4 to Dec. 7 exhibit “More than One: New Contemporary Prints and Multiples from the ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ Fine Arts Collection” at the ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ Fine Arts Gallery.
Danto, the Johnsonian Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Columbia University, is the art critic for The Nation. He will deliver the keynote lecture of the symposium at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in Room 103 of Wilson Hall. The lecture, “Before and After: Two Decades after the Sistine Chapel Controversy,” will address concerns about the restoration of Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the 1980s and ‘90s. The “Between Word and Image Symposium” was organized by the 2006-2007 fellows of the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities at ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ University. The fellows commissioned an original installation by Nashville artist Erika Johnson, which will be put on permanent display in the Warren Center after the end of the exhibition at the ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ Fine Arts Gallery.
