Emma Amos will speak at ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ University, helping to launch a new lecture series that will bring major artists to campus.
Amos, whose paintings, prints, works on paper and fiber art have been shown internationally, will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Room 103 of Wilson Hall on the ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ campus. Her topic will be “Being Relevant: You and Me.”
The lecture is free and open to the public. It begins a new program at ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ, “StudioVU: The Department of Art Lecture Series.”
“Students need to be exposed to more contemporary art that is going on around the world,” said Mel Ziegler, the new chair of the studio arts department at ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ. “One way to do that is to bring in artists who are showing nationally and internationally and begin a dialogue. We want the community to come, as well.”
Much of Amos’ work addresses race, gender, community and identity. Early in her career, she was the only female member of Spiral, a group of highly regarded African American artists which included Romare Bearden.
Amos’ art is included in the collections of the , the and the .
