Free tax preparation for qualified individuals will be offered Saturday, April 14, at the ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ-Edgehill Volunteer Income Tax Site (VITA) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nashville’s newest VITA site is located at the Easley Community Center at 1000 Edgehill Ave. This is the last day the site will be open before this year’s tax-filing deadline of April 17.
To be eligible, individuals must have a Social Security card and earn an income of less than $20,000. Families with a household income of under $40,000 also qualify. The VITA volunteers will prepare basic wage-earner taxes and e-file them free of charge. They will also make sure that the participants receive all applicable refunds, including the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. Refunds are available within seven to 10 days with e-filing and direct deposit.
“VITA helps ensure that Nashville’s working families are filing for the tax credits they have earned,” according to Samantha Hamernik, the site coordinator and a divinity student. The volunteers also strive to help families save hundreds of dollars in commercial tax fees.
Hamernik also said that more than 200 people have come to the site on Edgehill Avenue, and over half of those participating have been ²¤ÂÜÊÓƵ employees. The site is sponsored in part by the , a city-wide coalition of organizations that support economic development for low-income families, and .
